Let’s Talk About Hobbies

I would really like some input regarding your hobbies. My own hobbies seem so ordinary–because they are mine and I’m accustomed to them. Aren’t we each a little that way? So, even if you think your hobbies might not be interesting to the rest of us, I hope you’ll tell us about them anyway. Here are some questions to give you a sense of the direction that interests me for this project:
What are your hobbies?
Have you developed new hobbies since you turned 60?
Do you have some hobbies that you’ve practiced most of your life?
Have you had to give up any hobby because of “aging?”
What do you “get out” of doing these things?

Entertainment Choices

Most of us have more free time than we did when we were younger, and I hope we are having more fun. I’m wondering what kinds of choices you are making and if we are all doing essentially the same thing with our free time.

Please discuss your top entertainment choices? (Next week, we’ll talk about hobbies.)

Also, I invite you to answer any of the previously posted questions and respond to any that interest you.

A Life of Significance?

I wonder if I have done anything significant with my life? Did I make a difference? Is the world a better place because I have been here? These are some of the hardest questions I will ever try to answer! How about you?

Even though it is hard for me to figure out if I have mattered, it is easy for me to look at others and describe how they matter. Take one of my best friends. She has been an inspiration to me and many, many others. She is gentle, generous, and kind. She combines her talents for art, gardening, and cooking to create a peaceful retreat. Visiting Ann at her home is a reminder to each of us that the world is, indeed, and beautiful place. I return home inspired to be a better person.

Would you share with us a story about one of your friends who has been significant to the world around her?

Reading Recommendations

Gail Sheehy will speak at our library’s annual celebration of books and authors on May 16. Sheehy has just released her new book Passages in Caregiving. Those of us living in the area of Eureka Springs, AR, will have an opportunity to meet Sheehy and listen to her presentation.

Have you read Sheehy’s new book already?

If not, what have you read recently about aging and its related issues? Any recommendations for the rest of us? Please share.

Adventure!

I love adventures. I even love the word. Whenever I do something out of the ordinary for me, I usually call it an adventure. Recently, I took two of my aunts–ages 76 and 80–to a Segway park where they enjoyed riding for the full 30 minutes provided by their tickets. Great fun!

Describe one of your recent adventures, be it big or small.

How Are You — Really?

Do you feel like it is appropriate to talk about your health in a social setting?

Or — Is it a taboo?

Let’s Talk About Sex

How have your attitudes about sex changed since you were a young woman?

Take your answer in any direction you want.

NEW POST: Please Comment & Subscribe

Thanks to everyone who has visited our site and left comments. This week, we’d like to follow-up on our question about appearances. We recognize that appearances are the superficial aspect of aging but, realistically, we all face challenges as we age. Here are three questions that are quick and easy to answer, and we invite you to tell us how you feel about any or all three of them:

1. What are age-appropriate clothes for women over 60?
2. Do you think you are as attractive as you were when you were 30?
3. Have you ever had cosmetic surgery or used Botox? If so, why?

Be honest. Do I look okay…for my age?

Looking in the mirror, I think I’m fine. Then someone comments about another (usually younger) woman: “Hey, she looks great…for her age.”

Recently, a man and I had been emailing about a political campaign. Then one day we actually met. Though I didn’t mention this to him, he’s ten years older and six inches shorter than I am. He’s also bald as a bowling ball. But the first words out of his mouth were, “Hey, I bet you used to be a real knockout!”

Come on, tell us how you look…for your age.

How Do You Like Being Called an Old Woman?

What do you think is the most accurate and respectful term to use for women over 60? We are looking for the term that makes us proud to be in this category.

Susan and I wanted to turn the blatant phrase Old Women into something respectable. We couldn’t find any “old women” who would go along with us.

So, we are asking you. What term do you prefer? Senior? Elderwoman? Older Middle-age? Wise Woman? Old Lady? None of these?
